Beware: Spoilers are possible...you have been warned!

Director

Johannes Roberts is a director that embraces the scarier side of life. He has directed 47 Meters Down 1 and 2, The Strangers: Prey at Night, and The Other Side of the Door

Starring

Hanna John-Kamen (Ant-man and the Wasp), Kaya Scodelario (Crawl), Neal McDonough (Apex), Tom Hopper (Hitman's Wife's Bodyguard), Robbie Amell (Code 8), Donal Logue (Blade), Avan Jogia (Zombieland: Double Tap), and Nathan Dales (Letterkenny)

Plot

Set in 1998, this origin story explores the secrets of the mysterious Spencer Mansion and the ill-fated Raccoon City.

What I Think

This story starts in 1988 with the story of Claire and Chris Redfield as they are sleeping in a bunk bed in the Raccoon City Orphanage. Chris is sleeping with Claire to help her with her nightmares. As they sleep a demure dark figure can be seen in the shadows watching them. Claire wakes up and follows the figure through the corridors. She ends up in the games room which is completely dark except for a small light in a tent. Inside is the figure which can only be seen as an outline. Claire talks to it and the being answers.

Fast forward to the present (1998) and we find Claire hitchhiking back to Raccoon City with a truck driver. As they get closer to the city the driver gets distracted and hits somebody with the truck. The two freak out and argue but when they look back at the body, it's gone. This is just the beginning of a creepy and terrifying ride.

This movie has a very videogame feel to it that will be a welcome sight to fans of the game itself. From the Raccoon City Police department to the old characters that made you play with the lights on. This movie is scary but there are some funny parts that bring levity to the situation. The props such as the mansion doors, the zombie crows, and the "licker" bring plenty to reminisce about.

For the scares and nostalgia, I can honestly say this one is much better than the 2002 version of Resident Evil.

I am giving this film 4 out of 5 stars.
