The Devil Below

THE DEVIL BELOW

A short movie review for people with short attention spans!
Beware: Spoilers are possible...you have been warned!

Director
Brad Parker is mostly known for the found footage film The Chernobyl Diaries. He is more known for his visual effects work in movies like Ad Astra, Godzilla: King of the Monsters, and more recently Loki.

Starring
This movie stars Will Patton (Halloween, 2018) , Alicia Sanz (Killing Sarai), Adan Canto (2 Hearts), Zach Avery (You're Not Alone), Chinaza Uche (Nigerian Prince), and Jonathan Sardowski (Chernobyl Diaries).

Plot
A group of four amateur adventurers who specialize in exploring remote and forsaken places pay a visit to Shookum Hills, a town in the remote Appalachian Mountains, which was abandoned decades ago due to a mysterious coal mine fire.

What I Think
As this movie starts we are at a huge mine. The miners are leaving for the day when a son goes up to his father and lets him know that he is going back in to get one of his friends. The son is attacked by a vicious entity and dragged back into the mine never to be seen again. Let the carnage begin.
As a whole, this movie was interesting. The story was a bit of a mystery involving a town that is no longer on maps. There were some hallmark horror/sci fi tropes that included jump scares, odd noises, and crazy creatures. We have a group of explorers that are trying to solve a conspiracy theory disguised as a geological survey team. Finally there is a bad ass guide that is as much of a mystery as the mission they are on.

My personal take is that there should have been more of a effort put forth to make the creature as terrifying as possible. The costume looked cheaply made and unimaginative. Our creature was a mixture of the minions for The Gate and the monsters from Feast but a little cheaper. The fact that you never got a good look at them for longer than half a second was a telltale sign that the director thought so too.
I felt that the main monster was almost a direct rip off of the alien from Aliens just a smaller scale. How the movie ends is a bit of a let down as well but at least the acting was good.

While watching this film I was reminded of other movies that kind of fit the genre. The main one was The Descent but closely followed by As Above So Below and The Silence.

This movie was entertaining but I lost interest when the creature was revealed and it wasn't as scary as it could have been.

I give this movie 2 1/2 of 5 stars.
