Arkansas

A short movie review for people with short attention spans!
Beware: Spoilers are possible...you have been warned!

Director
Clark Duke is mostly known for his acting roles in movies like Sex Drive, Superbad, Hot Tub Time Machine 1 and 2, and Kick-Ass. This is his feature film directorial debut.

Starring
Liam Hemsworth (The Hunger Games Series), Clark Duke (Bad Moms), John Malkovich (Valley of the Gods), Eden Brolin (Blood Bound), Vince Vaughn (Hacksaw Ridge), and Vivica A. Fox (Kill Bill Vol. 1 and 2)

Plot
Kyle and Swin live by the orders of an Arkansas-based Drug Kingpin named Frog, whom they have never met. But when a deal goes horribly wrong the consequences are deadly.

What I Think
This is a film about drug dealers, but specifically the ones that are coming up through the ranks. What is it that drives a person to want to become a drug dealer when the only two options are jail or death. This film digs into that subject with a fair amount of drama, murder, suspense, and even mystery.

The way this begins has a hint of independent movie making that has been lost, in some ways, by the ones that make the big budget movies. There is a thin layer of dark comedy throughout that gives the film a boost during the lulls in the white spaces. The story jumps around but only to tell a deeper story that will link together in the end, and I know I say this a lot with movies like this but...it has a Tarantino, Doug Liman, or Coen Brothers feel to it.

I can honestly say that I enjoyed the film. The way the story is told adds a deeper understanding of why our characters do what they do. It peels back the layers of the backstories of the characters that matter most and even adds a touch of mystique to the additional characters that come along.

All in all, this was a very well-done piece of art that was enjoyable and uncomfortable at the same time.

I give this movie 4 1/2 of 5 stars.
