Sonic the Hedgehog

Sonic the Hedgehog...a short movie review for people with short attention spans!
Spoilers Possible!!!
Director
This movie is Jeff Fowler's full length motion picture directorial debut. He comes from the visual arts and animation world.

Starring
Ben Schwartz (Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles), Jim Carrey (Kick Ass 2), James Marsden (Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues), Tika Sumpter (The Nomads), Adam Pally (Dog Days), and Lee Majdoub (See No Evil 2)

Plot
After discovering a small, blue, fast hedgehog, a small town police officer must help it defeat an evil genius who wants to do experiments on it.

What I think
The origin story for the little blue hedgehog starts on a planet far from ours. He discovers at a very young age that he was given a gift of speed and shortly after that, he discovers that some will go very far to possess what he has, even if that means killing him.

Sonic must travel through space, using rings that open up portals, to escape danger from planet to planet. He eventually ends up on Earth and makes his home in the wide opened state of Montana where he spies on the local population while trying to stay out of sight.
Because he has needed to stay hidden in the shadows, he has become very lonely and must find ways to entertain himself. His loneliness eventually causes him to lose control which catches the attention of the US Government.

The US Government not knowing how to handle this new situation put the mission to find answers into the hands of Dr. Robotnik who is a Narcissist, a genius, and a psychotic all wrapped into one.

Mischief and hijinks follow Sonic the Hedgehog, along with his human companion, on this journey and through the rest of the movie which is definitely kid friendly entertainment.
Originally the look of Sonic sparked some controversy but the end product in this film is quite spectacular. James Marsden plays his part as a small town cop and Sonics human guide and chauffer very well, getting some laugh breaks and corny dialog.

The big portion that I am very glad about is that we get to see Jim Carrey in his strong form as a comedic actor. This is one of his strongest performances and one I haven't seen from him in quite a few years. The way he made you both love and hate Dr. Robotnik was a thing of genius.

Finally, I have to give props to Voice Over extraordinaire Ben Schwartz who has appeared in numerous TV shows, movies, and video games. He is also the voice of Dewey Duck in Duck Tales, Rutabaga Rabitowits in Bojack Horseman, and more recently Leonardo in Rise of the Ninja Turtles. As Sonic he very much conveyed the good and bad times as well as breathed life into the blue hedgehog which gave him character and emotion that could not be beat.

With all of that said, if you are a fan of family movies or have kids that love video games and animation then this is the perfect movie for a family movie night.

I give this movie for adults ⭐⭐⭐½ of 5 stars and for Kids ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ of 5 stars.
