Movie Review: Gretel and Hansel

Gretel and Hansel...a short movie review for people with short attention spans!!
Spoilers Possible!!
Director
Oz Perkins, also directed The Blackcoats Daughter, which I gave a horrible review but he definitely made up for that movie with this one.

Starring
Sophia Lillis (Nancy Drew and the Hidden Staircase), Alice Krige (Thor: The Dark World), Jessica De Gouw (Otherlife), Samuel Leakey (MotherFatherSon), and Charles Babalola (The Legend of Tarzan)

Plot
A long time ago in a distant fairy tale countryside, a young girl leads her little brother into a dark wood in desperate search of food and work, only to stumble upon a nexus of terrifying evil.

What I Think
A story about witchcraft that starts with a little girl born with a darkness inside that can only be removed by darkness. By removing the affliction a new darkness follows the little girl who is eventually banished from her home and village.

Years later we come upon a girl and her little brother who are traveling down a path to find work. The jobs for women are not proper and the boy is not old enough to do anything really. When they return home their mother chastises them and gives them an ultimatum...leave or die.
From this point on the two must travel alone through the woods to find food and work. Both got through many obstacles before stumbling upon an old house in the middle of the woods. On the table is a bountiful feast but no diners. The duo break in and take bits of food to continue their journey. This is when they are caught by an old crone.

As we continue with the story there is a new twist on the old Grimm fairy tale, as most of those tales are cautionary and this one is going further down a rabbit hole that has many tunnels.

The overall feel of the movie is edgy and creepy. Some of the scenes are uncomfortable to watch but are integral to the story being told. Any movie that has kids being hurt bothers me a bit due to the fact that I am a parent and that act gets a bad response from me.

Other than that I can honestly say that this movie was very good even though it may have dragged in some spots.

I give this movie ⭐⭐⭐⭐of 5 stars.
