Spoilers Possible!!!

Director

Susanne Bier, who also directed the 2014 Bradley Cooper vehicle "Serena" has put forth an exciting foot in the genre of suspense with this movie.

Starring

Sandra Bullock, John Malkovich, Trevante Rhodes

The Plot

Five years after an ominous unseen presence drives most of society to suicide, a mother and her two children make a desperate bid to safety.

 What I think

The premise of this film has parallels with the M. Night Shamalan movie The Happening in which the population is overwhelmed by an unseen force that causes everyone to commit mass suicide. In this case the unseen force is a mixture of an invisible entity and garden variety psychopaths. The way you become suicidal is by getting a look at this "invisible" entity which then causes your eyes to turn a blackish color and brings forth a hallucination. The hallucination then pushes the person into a situation where they take their life. Crazy right.

There are a steady stream of flashbacks that tell the story of what happened prior to what you see in the beginning of the movie. These are not the most intense scenes but what they went through before having to take the path they chose is quite exhilarating and suspenseful. Even though the flashbacks give context and direction, what happens during the journey is also just as thrilling as the rest of the movie.
