Movie Review: Hunter Killer (2018)

Hunter Killer … a short movie review for those with short attention spans.
Warning: Possible Spoilers!

Directed By: Donovan Marsh also directed another action cop drama called Avenged.

Starring: Gerard Butler (300), Gary Oldman (The Fifth Element), Common (Wanted), Linda Cardelinni (A Simple Favor) , and the late Michael Nyquist (John Wick, Mission Impossible - Ghost Protocol, and the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo)

The Plot: An untested American submarine captain teams with U.S. Navy Seals
to rescue the Russian President, who has been kidnapped by a rogue General.

What I think: As far as military movies are concerned, this particular one is a middle of the road movie. The plot was easy to understand with a clear winner at the end, the stunt work was good, but the visual graphics suffered a little bit. There were some portions where it looked like the actors were reading from a cue card or forgot their lines because their conversations didn't sound natural.

There were two tiers to the plot. The first tier being, since this is a submarine movie, you had the water side and the other level is a ground assault. In essence you had two missions that were the same mission with a mutual end game.

Gerard Butler played the strong/over confident Sub Boat Captain, Captain Glass, and Michael Nyquist played an enemy Sub Boat Captain, Captain Andropov, that becomes a POW in the story. Together they can stop an International Incident. Sounds a bit like a buddy cop movie but it is exciting.

Even though there was some technical shortfalls and some minor acting problems this was a decent story and film. Finally, Gary Oldman is in this movie and he does have some pivotal scenes but they are very few, great performance though.

As always, if you have family or friends in the military let them know that you appreciate the things they do. If you like military movies then this is one to add to the collection.

I give this movie ⭐⭐⭐ of 5 stars.
