Movie Review: Lords of Chaos (2018)

Lords of Chaos … a short movie review for those with short attention spans.
Warning: Possible Spoilers!

Directed by: Jonas Åkerlund
Starring: Rory Culkin, Emory Cohen, Sky Ferreira, Valter Skarsgård, etc

Plot: This movie/biopic is based on the rise and fall of the Norwegian Black Metal scene. It follows the story of the band Mayhem and its leader Euronymous (Rory Culkin) and bassist Varg (Emory Cohen) through suicides, arsons, and murders. There are legends and tales about Mayhem and their antics and then there is the truth.

What I think:  As a fan of all things metal, I thought I knew the story of Mayhem. They were the first real Black Metal pioneers. In this film you get to see the beginning of the band, the many line up changes, the church burnings, the murders, and the final moments of the band. There is a scene in the movie where you can see that Euronymous (Rory Culkin) makes a breakthrough and finally sees that the line between the fiction he has created and reality has been broken and he has to make a decision to keep  moving forward or stop. The outcome is surprising. Good story, good camera work, and good actors.

Know that this movie is a "Hard" R rating and not for kids. There are violent depictions of suicide and murder, nudity, and harsh language.

As always, if you are a fan of Metal and Biographies then you may enjoy this film. If you are not comfortable with blood, blasphemy, and extreme violence then please find another film to watch.

You have been warned.

I give this movie ⭐⭐⭐½ of 5 stars.
