Director
This scifi film was directed by Denis Villeneuve who is also responsible for Sicario, Prisoners, and Blade Runner 2049. His most recent directorial performance is the film Dune which can be found in theaters or at a streaming service near you.

Starring
Amy Adams (Man of Steel), Jeremy Renner (Tag), Forest Whitaker (The Last King of Scotland), Michael Stuhlbarg (The Shape of Water), Mark O'Brien (Ready or Not), and Tzi Ma (The Farewell)

Plot
A linguist works with the military to communicate with alien lifeforms after twelve mysterious spacecraft appear around the world.

What I Think
This movie begins with the birth of a little girl to our main character Louise. We have a small glimpse into the short life of the child, from birth to her premature death in her teens, with Louise. From this point our main story begins and we learn that Louise is a professor of language at a University. Within the first 20 minutes we have gone through a bevy of emotions. Now we have an invasion of sorts with the arrival of mysterious spacecrafts all over the world.

These events spark a worldwide panic that consumes most in the developed and third world countries. Looting is evident and curfews start. The governments of all the nations must come together to communicate with the extraterrestrial visitors. This is where the story becomes interesting.

As a huge fan of linguistics this movie pulled me in and really interested me. As this is a science fiction movie as well as a drama we get a sneak peak into what we think the government might do if the opportunity arose to make this kind of contact. Although a closed mind tends to want answers now the analytical mind tends to seek deeper meaning and answers when confronting new stimuli.

The aliens themselves are not like the humanoid style that most sci-fi movies depict and their intricate forms are quite visually stimulating in that they both scare and create a sense of intrigue that follows the lines of the story into a sort of dreamlike sequence in later scenes.

The main spoiler that I will mention is that not everything is as it seems from the beginning of this movie. Be aware.

If you are a fan of movies involving aliens then try out the Alien Quadrilogy, Signs, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, and for my science fiction horror fans out there Night of the Creeps.

I give this movie a 4 of 5 stars.
