Movie Review: Hellboy (2019)

Hellboy (2019)...a short movie review for people with short attention spans!
Spoilers Possible!!!

Director:  Neil Marshall, UK director who also directed The Descent and Doomsday, helmed this Scifi Action film.

Starring:  David Harbour, Milla Jovovich, Daniel Dae Kim, and Ian McShane

Plot:  Based on the graphic novel by Mike Mignola, Hellboy, caught between the worlds of the supernatural and human, fights an ancient sorceress hell bent on revenge.

What I think:  I really like the actor that played Hellboy, David Harbour, the make up was fantastic, Ian McShane was very good as the father of Hellboy, and the action.  The gore and the blood were very unexpected. I dislike that there were too many plot lines.  You started with a Luchador scene in Mexico then you were brought into giants invading Europe and then giant hunters and then witches, fairies, changelings, King Arthur, were-panthers etc.  There was way too much going on that by the end you were kind of scratching your head as to what the main plot was and even then you were still confused.  And just in case you’re wondering the main plot line is about Nimu, the sorceress trying to take over the world, who is played by Milla Jovovich.

The one really obvious thing about this particular Hellboy iteration is that there is a lot of cussing...a lot of cussing. Maybe it was to make the movie a bit edgier or to give the movie that R rating but it was a bit over the top.

If you were expecting to check out a Guillermo Del Toro style Hellboy movie then you will be very disappointed. The David Harbour version, while new and fairly exciting, is stylized more like the comic book in the way that Hellboys’ face is more angular. This version is very crude and angry unlike the Ron Perlman portrayal of the red devil that is a bit more snarky and brooding.

As always, if you enjoyed the previous Hellboy series then this one will whet your appetite but in terms of pay off and visual stimulation stick with the previous versions.

I give this movie ⭐⭐¾ of 5 stars.
