Movie Review: Escape Room (2019)

Escape Room...a short movie review for people with short attention spans!
Spoilers Possible!!!

Director:  Adam Robitel who also directed 2018's Insidious: The Last Key.

Starring:  Taylor Russell, Logan Miller, Jay Ellis, Tyler Labine, Deborah Ann Woll, Nick Dodani

Plot:  Six strangers find themselves in a maze of deadly mystery rooms and must use their wits to survive.

What I Think:  We meet a few of the main characters immediately and get an idea of what is about to happen. A college student, a screw up, and high power trader. All were sent a puzzle box and have to figure out how to open it. They all get the same message in the box after solving the puzzle, "Report to the Minos Escape Room and attempt to win $10,000." All three go to the destination and have to wait in a sitting area where they meet three more participants. A Gamer, a War Veteran, and a Miner. It is now that the talk of the Escape Room is brought up. This is also where the game begins.

The premise of this movie has been seen before. Is it cliché? Yes it is, but in the vain of Cube and the Saw series the puzzles are important to the story and the blood and gore are what makes the movie worth the ticket price. In this case they willingly go to this escape room with the promise of winning a money prize only to have the unbelievable realization that they are now going to have to work together to get to the next room or die.

I personally enjoyed the tension and helplessness that came with watching this movie. Every room entered opened up new challenges and every challenge introduced a new, horrible way to meet your demise. The reveal of why them is very interesting and what happens at the end is chilling.

As always, if you enjoyed the Saw series and the Cube trilogy and have a taste for the occasional gore fest then look no further than this sleeper.

I give Escape Room ⭐⭐⭐⭐  of 5 stars.
