Movie review: The Curse of La Llorona

The Curse of La Llorona… A short movie review for people with short attention span‘s
Spoilers possible!!!

Directed by:  Michael Chaves

Starring:  Linda Cardellini, Raymond Cruz, Patricia Velasquez

Plot:  Ignoring the eerie warning of a troubled mother suspected of child endangerment, a social worker and her own small kids are soon drawn into a frightening supernatural realm.

Synopsis: Anna Garcia, Linda Cardellini, is a single mother of two kids who is a social worker. One day at work she is tasked to visit the house of a mother, named Patricia Alvarez, who is suspected of abusing her children. Upon showing up she learns that the children are locked in a closet and Ms. Alvarez is crazed, screaming not to let the kids out.

Once Anna opens the closet it is obvious that the children have been harmed but they claim that their mother is not to blame for the injuries that they have sustained. When she attempts to leave with the children, Ms. Alvarez, played by Patricia Velasquez, tries to kill her but is thwarted by a police officer.

Moving ahead, the Ms. Alvarez's kids are recovering in the hospital when the lights start flickering and the halls become dark and empty. The boys leave the safety of their hospital room and are lured to an area down the hall. There are some flashes of a female figure in a wedding dress following them. They scream and that's when the worst happens.

Anna's phone rings and she receives news that the boys have died. What follows is a scary ride into the realm of supernatural Mexican folklore.

What I think:  The movie started out very good with some extremely emotional shouting matches and jump scares. Then we get to kind of see what La Llorona looks like through flashes of reality and ghostly poltergeist actions. Eventually you do get to see the ghost and I personally feel that she could have been scarier. There are plenty of makeup artists that I know who could have put together a face was absolutely terrifying but I am fairly confident that they didn't go that route because they feel that she did have to have a sense of underlying beauty.

There are some moments of levity in the movie that allieviate some tension and help you forget that crazy s*** is happening all around. Most of that comedy is supplied by Latino actor Raymond Cruz as the Curandero, or Healer, named Rafael Olvera. His job was to seek out how to get rid of La Llorona and then make it so. He ends up doing some rituals that I have done with my kids and family to get rid of the evil eye and bad juju such as the huevo (egg). Whether these work in real life is up in the air but they seem to have an affect in the story.

If you are hip to the way things link up then consider this the sixth film associated with the Conjuring series. During the movie a nod to the Annabelle Saga is brought into the story when Anna Garcia meets with the priest at the local church. He then relays that he has had experience with this type of supernatural activity before. James Wan being the producer also links the flick to the movies.  Coincidence??

As a Mexican American I was thought that the visual representation of this story could have been better but all in all it was a good movie.

If you are okay with the Supernatural, Ghosts, Horror, Child Murder, Jump Scares, and occasional Witchcraft then this movie might be in your wheel house.

I give this movie a solid ⭐⭐⭐½ out of 5 stars.
