Movie Review: Arctic (2018)

Arctic … a short movie review for people with short attention spans.
Spoilers Possible!!!

Directors: Joe Penna

Starring: Mads Mikkelsen, Maria Thelma Smáradóttir

Plot: A man stranded in the Arctic after a airplane crash. He must decide whether to remain in the relative safety of his makeshift camp or to embark on a deadly trek through the unknown.

What I Think: In regards to pure survival, being stranded and alone in a frozen tundra has it's own challenges. Knowing how to survive before becoming stranded has something of a learning curve. As we join our main character we find that he is totally alone and adhering to a strict routine hoping to be rescued, when lo and behold waa helicopter flys by during a
massive storm. He flags it down only to have the chopper crash with one survivor.

A new option comes from this incident, stay and wait for rescue or try to reach a ranger station that is a couple of days walk in a blizzard with a wounded person to drag around a mountain range. There are some factors to keep in mind...first, subzero temperatures which can lead to frost bite, next, dangerous wildlife that could cause injury and death, and finally,
extreme terrain that can snap bones and cause fatigue.
This movie shows an unbelievable amount of desperation, despair, and the absolute will to live. It begs the question, how far would you go to save yourself or a stranger? Mads Mikkelsen did a great job of conveying his emotions in this flick. Since this cast only consisted of 2 characters and a whole lot of props, he truly kept the movie interesting and even when he says nothing vocally his body language speaks volumes.

If you like survival movies, this one is on par with The Edge, K2, and Alive (minus the cannibalism) check it out.

I give it ⭐⭐⭐⭐ out of 5 stars
