Plot: On the run in the year 1987, Bumblebee finds refuge in a junkyard in a small California beach town. Charlie, on the cusp of turning 18 and trying to find her place in the world, discovers Bumblebee, battle scarred and broken. When Charlie revives him, she quickly learns this is no ordinary, yellow VW bug.
What I Think: In this Transformers prequel we find Bumblebee with an actual voice of his own trying to find a safe haven for the other Autobots. Our main character though is a young girl named Charlie, Hailee Steinfeld, who is a mechanic with a few issues.
As the movie begins, a war is waging between the Autobots and the Decepticons on
their home planet of Cybertron. The Autobots begin to get overrun and are forced to retreat. Optimus Prime enlists Bumblebee to find a safe fall back location. Bumblebee lands on Earth and is immediately attacked by US forces led by Agent Burns, John Cena, on a training mission. He escapes and becomes inactive as a VW Bug.

Shortly after Charlie, Hailee Steinfeld, finds him at a junk yard all beaten up. She rebuilds him not knowing that the VW is actually a giant robot. When she does discover what he really is they build a relationship and learn from each other.
This is a touching movie that is aimed mainly at young adults with topics ranging from depression, love, respect, courage, and integrity. There are also key elements about betrayal when the Decepticons go back on their word, big surprise. The subject of loss is also very prevalent with Charlie who is dealing with the death of her father before the start of the story. There is also a monumental fight at the end but that seems to be an afterthought.
The movie answers a few questions that are prominent in the rest of the Transformers series as well. In this iteration Bumblebee has a voice and you get to see how he lost it. You get a sense of how long the Autobots have been on Earth.
In conclusion, I liked the movie even though it is more of a kids film but it had a heart which is lacking in most movies these days.
If you liked the other movies in the Transformers series then this one will fit in well.
I give this movie a ⭐⭐⭐½ of 5 stars.
