Movie Review: Pirate Radio (2009)

Pirate Radio … a short movie review for those with short attention spans.
Warning: Possible Spoilers!

Director:
Richard Curtis

Starring: Philip Seymour Hoffman, Bill Nighy, Nick Frost, Chris O'Dowd, Kenneth Branagh, and Rhys Ifans.

The Plot: A band of rogue DJs that captivated Britain, playing the music that defined a generation and standing up to a government that wanted classical music, and nothing else, on the airwaves.

What I Think: First and foremost, RIP Philip Seymour Hoffman, you are missed. Now that we got that out of the way. This movie was absolutely fantastic. It illustrates that Rock and Roll can bring people together especially when what they love is considered a menace to society.

The Count, Philip Seymour Hoffman, is an American Disc Jockey in England, along with other UK radio personalities, during Vietnam giving the Crown and the uppity Parliament a great big earful of solid Rock and Roll and off-the-cuff radio shows from a repurposed ship/radio station on the water. Great comedy was supplied by the cast and a great tale was told in this story.

Given that in the 60's the "Big Brother" of London wanted to keep everything as
boring and drab as possible, the radio was the only escape for those unwilling to conform. The music in this film is absolutely on period and also the peak of great music in my opinion. All the characters jelled together to put on a funny and well rounded story that would be unbelievable if it wasn't absolutely true.

From soundtrack, to plot, to all the characters, this film is fun, exciting, and worth the cost of a Bluray and more. Pick it up.

As always, if you cross Monty Python with a Rolling Stones reunion show then this is your literal cup of tea.  Watch it and enjoy.

I give this movie ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ out of 5 stars.
